The Velveteen Rabbit.
29th September - 10th October 2008.
Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human.
"'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'"
Recently voted as one of Jacqueline Wilson’s Top Ten books to read aloud, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams, has lost none of its appeal since its publication in 1922. Its charming storyline and central theme of the transformative power of love have made it an enduring bedtime classic and a favourite of children and adults alike.
The Take Away Theatre Company’s innovative new production uses music, dance and song to tell this wonderful story. Using just two actors to create all the roles, this innovative piece is a spellbinding journey into the imagination. Full of humour and pathos this faithful retelling is suitable for adults and children to enjoy together.
Workshop
In schools the production is followed by a short participatory workshop giving the children and opportunity to sing along to music inspired by characters from the play. Children will use actions and song to communicate ideas and emotions. The workshop is fun and engaging and encourages participants to enter the magical world of the nursery.
